There’s no escaping it . . . it’s hot out there! Unfortunately, summer electric bills usually rise as the temperature does.
Try these tips to keep your DFW home cool while saving money.
Cover Your Windows
Sunshine is the best part of the season, unless it’s overheating our homes and increasing summer electric costs. Does the sun shine directly into your home during the day? Create a habit of closing curtains and blinds before leaving for work.
You can also block light with strategic landscaping and home upgrades. Plant trees to shade your windows or invest in awnings. Your home will stay cooler, plus it will have more curb appeal!
Turn Up the Thermostat
According to the Public Utility Commission of Texas, every degree you lower the thermostat increases energy usage by six to eight percent. Turning it up a degree or two can make a big impact. Rather than relying solely on A/C, use fans to circulate cool air. Don’t forget to turn them off when you leave the room.
Do you have a manual thermostat? Consider investing in a programmable or smart model instead. A programmable thermostat will allow you to control the temperature throughout the day (set it higher when you’re not home), while a smart thermostat, like the Nest, will actually learn to program itself based on your preference.
Finally, it’s never too late to address A/C maintenance if you skipped it this spring.
Turn Down the Hot Water Heater
With temps topping 100 degrees, it’s unlikely you want a hot shower! Many manufacturers set their water heaters at 140 degrees. Turning yours down to 120 will save on summer electric while still providing enough heat for essential household tasks.
Update Your Light Bulbs
Are you using traditional light bulbs? Switch to energy efficient LED or CFL bulbs.
LED bulbs may cost more upfront, but they tend to last longer than CFLs. For more information, check out this article that breaks down the differences between LEDs and CFLs.
Research Electric Providers
When was the last time you compared electric providers? Prices and benefits (such as free nights) are constantly changing, so it’s a good idea to comparison shop providers annually. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, read this article for tips on choosing the best provider.
Avoid the Stove
Using the stove or oven will heat up your home fast. Use your grill or crock pot instead, and experiment with no cook meals like sandwiches and salads. Do you really want to eat a heavy meal in this heat anyway?
If you do need to use your stove, do so in the early morning or late evening.
Skip the Clothes Dryer
Save on summer electric by skipping the clothes dryer on laundry day. Instead, take advantage of hot, sunny weather and hang your clothes outside. You’ll save energy, and your clothes will smell fresh!
Get Out of the House
Instead of cranking the A/C and spending hot days inside, plan an outing. Take the kids to the splash pad or pool, check out the newest exhibit at your favorite museum, or simply go window shopping at the mall. Make sure to turn up your thermostat before you leave!
Unplug Unused Appliances
Did you know that appliances draw energy even when they’re not being used. Make it a habit to unplug the toaster, coffee maker, and other small appliances when you’re done using them. Over time, you’ll save energy and money.
