N.J. districts are ranked highest to lowest. You may be surprised to see how your community ranks among the wealthiest and the poorest.

Patch put together a list of New Jersey school districts and ranked each one based on household income, from highest to lowest (see list below).

The numbers are U.S. Census household median income data derived from the most recent American Community Survey. The census listed all districts that responded to the survey.

The list shows the gigantic income gap between rich and poor in New Jersey - an issue that has taken center stage over the past 45 years as school officials have tried, often unsuccessfully, to develop a fair school-funding system in the state.

Millburn is the district with the highest median income, at $184,783 - nearly five times the median income of Camden, $25,042.

The richer and middle-income districts are also the ones that rely much more heavily on property taxes for income - while the poorer ones depend upon state funding. The richer and middle-income districts have higher property taxes as a result.
