Hey y’all. Recently I came across some sewing stock photos that I shared on my Facebook page for everyone to get a laugh.
And then I got to thinking – surely these were all, right? I mean, surely there aren’t more of these out there, right?
WRONG.
Y’all. Google and some stock photo sites and I now present to you the most ridiculous sewing stock photos on the internet. Though the wrongness of these images is evident without words, I made up stories for my own amusem*nt.
Images from Getty Images and iStock Photo – watermarks were not altered.
It starts with a young and upcoming fashion designer. Dreaming of her chance on Project Runway.
Though Nina Garcia would certainly not approve of this fabric (“I just don’t see a stylish woman wearing goldfish”), our young designer is full of hope and promise.
Wisely, she chooses the green fabric. But then she pushes fashion forward withteal topstitching thread.
It’s the unconventional sewing challenge!
“This is going to be FIERCE! I am so winning immunity this round!”
Grandma may have decided to try one of those new fangled machines, but her sewing styleremains firmly in 1949
Oops…already skipped mental preparation
Maybe a change of shirt will help – after all, a neat appearance is important
Now that she’s got her neat appearance nailed, Grandma really needs an unexpected visitor. Maybe one who can locate the power plug and presser foot lever.
When Sally inherited Grandma’s old machine, she knew she could make herself the perfect dress for the ball. If only she could choose the right color thread.
Having chosen the white, though, Sally just could not figure out threading. Those vintage machines are so different from the ones on YouTube.
Just when she thought all was lost, some friendly birds flew in and helps Sally get started. Unfortunately, they flew out after helping her thread the machine.
F— it, it’s just going to be a hat.

But why are they all sitting on the wrong side of the sewing machine? Is this some ninja sewing skill I’ve yet to master..?

That’s what I was wondering!

Hahahaha yes first thought that came to me, “Why are the machines facing me?”

The pics are so funny I didn’t even notice that!!! ???? That makes then totally useless sewing images, right?! Lol ????

WHY are they using these backwards??? OMG 😀 I’m dying here.

LOL I was thinking the same thing!

so glad someone said that – I’m thinking the machines are all the wrong way around !!

They’re ridiculous enough on their own, but your captions make them even better. The backwards machines get me every time.

Wow! Those are awesome. The machines are facing the wrong way?? Are they sewing in reverse?

I immediately thought what Andrea_R has stated here. Why are the machines backwards?

Andrea said the exact same thing I was thinking and laughing about. That top green machine is the same machine I first learned to sew on so right away I could see she was sitting behind the machine. Then I noticed all the others were as well. I mean, really, I get they want to use these pictures to advertise their machines, but can’t they at least shoot them using a machine the right way?

Grandma has some amazing sewing backwards skills! The green girl must be her apprentice.

Omg, this is hilarious! Backwards! And I love how after she changed her shirt grandma seems to be randomly sewing in the middle of the piece where there is no seam!
Reply
Oh my god I’ve been sewing with my machine the wrong way round all this time!!!!!!
Reply
Now I see where I’ve been going wrong! All these years, I’ve been sitting THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MACHINE. I didn’t realise before that the controls were all supposed to face away from you!!!!!
Hilarious!Reply
Sally
I think Grandma really got inspired since she changed her shirt to that stunning navy blue…going to attempt an applique perhaps?? Hmmm…she’s smackdab in the center of her garment and using green thread??? and that look of determination!! Yep, she’s going for an applique…a fern, a frog, a green tree? endless possibilities abound. (Oh, and I’m confident she will eventually find the right number to use.) These pics were so funny…thanks for the laughs!

Wow. Just…wow.
I am a model AND I have been sewing for over 25 years. Maybe I should do some GOOD sewing stock photos. 😉

I’m lucky to have shoes on when I sew nevermind a “clean dress” full make-up and hair done! Too darn funny!!
Gee maybe if I did all that my sewing would improve?….NOT!!

I don’t even have my shies on when I see, its so much better to sew without them. Socks, sure. Shies, no. And I don’t like sewing in dresses, shorts or pants only.
Hilarious post though, love it.

LOL! Took me a minute to notice they were using the machine from the wrong side too… DOH! How did no one notice this?!

Too Funny!

Wow, and to think I’ve been doing it wrong all these years… you know, sitting in front of my machine…

erm – I sew in my pajamas if necessary and as for having a wash?….or doing the dishes?…..lipstick?….not when a project is calling! I do however have my machine the right way round!

You missed the ad from a couple years ago where the picture must have been flipped our the machine made especially for lefties as the needle was on the right side of the machine with the motor on the left!
Reply
Don’t you just love the ads for sewing machines that are placed up to a foot from the edge of the table and the fabric that is under the needle is already sewn (or embroidered) as the case may be. Do they think sewists are so dumb that we can’t see that it is a posed shot. Why not show a machine ready for work – especially those that have a $10,000+ price tag.
To me these photos are like cookbook photos that if you read the recipe and then look at the picture, you know they didn’t make it according to instructions since they want to have the food look fashionable. Like a casserole that calls for 1 cup of cheese on top and then melted but the picture shows at most a tablespoon of cheese that is barely limp from the heat.
Madison Avenue and the Ad agencies seems to think that the public is just too stupid and will fall for anything!

The photos were funny enough, but the captions made these hilarious! 🙂

They are sew much more clever than I!
I cannot sew with the sewing machine the wrong way around – fighting the feed dog to pull the fabric toward me while smiling as if all were going well!Reply
Oh thank you for the laugh!
BTW, my granny’s machine is a Singer, and I seem to have acquired it. I sewed on it when I was at university. Interestingly enough, the most comfortable shoes for sewing on it were… heels (or at least court shoes). It was the way the button was positioned on the presser foot.

I love the green thread with the white and red fabric! And sewing in the middle of the fabric, not at the seam edge!

Maybe they are all left handed and therefore got turned around when trying to face the machine, lol

These are hilarious! But by coincidence, I have the same book that you showed, printed the same year! Only yesterday I was reading it (trying to find a sewing techique), and saw the section where it mentioned looking presentable, having a good attitude, etc. LOL! Thanks for sharing!
