Can you get a loan if you are under debt review?
The NCA states no one under debt review is eligible for further loans until they have completed the debt review process and are no longer over-indebted.
While under debt review, you cannot access further credit in the form of a loan or credit card. This is not to make life difficult but rather to help you regain financial control.
If a consumer is organised and doesn't mind the risk and effort, they can repay each creditor according to the debt counsellor's repayment plan. On the other hand, consumers who want convenience and less risk can pay the debt counsellor, who will distribute the debt using a Payment Distribution Agency (PDA).
Unless all the accounts are paid up or the consumer becomes entitled to a clearance certificate, the only way to terminate the debt review process, according to the NCR's Withdrawal from Debt Review Guidelines, is to apply to court for either the rescission of the debt review order if one was obtained, or for a ...
With this being said, not everyone can qualify for debt review and there are instances where it can be declined. Below is a list of those scenarios: Your current budget allows you to comfortably pay your debts at the current interest rates. You do not have enough debt to qualify.
DEBT repayments MUST SOLVE IN 60 MONTHS
This is generally 60 months that is 5 years. This is the most that credit providers can accept. What this means is that the amount that we will propose to pay every month should at least pay off the outstanding debt within 5 years. This excludes the home loan.
The cost of debt review removal through The National Debt Review Center is set at R8550. 00 vat exclusive, with an option to pay this amount over 2 or 3 months.
How can you legally exit debt review? The only way you can terminate debt review is if the debt review flag/ warning is removed from your credit report. For this debt review flag to be removed, credit bureaus need to be issued with a debt review clearance certificate.
Importantly, there are legal requirements in place to ensure the prompt removal of the debt review flag. Credit bureaus are obligated by law to remove the flag within 21 days of receiving the clearance certificate.
Years of commitment and hard work will all lead up to getting a Clearance Certificate. The certificate marks the end of the Debt Counselling journey. A consumer is eligible to receive it once all restructured debt is paid up and all bonds or long-term agreement payments are up to date.
What is the disadvantage of debt review?
Disadvantages (and their impact): No access to new credit. During Debt Review, you cannot access new loans or credit cards. While this helps break the borrowing cycle, it can restrict your financial flexibility.
Consumers should be very wary of this. The only way you can exit the debt review process is if you have paid up all your debt. Anyone or company claiming they can help you leave the process before this, should be seen as a red flag. To cancel the debt review process, you need to be issued with a clearance certificate.
Check your credit report
You can get a credit report at any of the credit bureaus, including Experian, TransUnion, etc. This can be done for free every year. If the bureaus have not removed the 'under debt review' flag from your profile, it will be shown on the front page of your report.
'Debt review' stays on your name until you complete the debt review process, get your clearance certificate and are declared debt-free. This usually takes between 36-60 months, but it can be even faster. After the process, the debt review status is permanently removed.
There is no permanent record of having applied for debt review once the Debt Counsellor removes you from debt review.
Once you've completed debt review, and credit bureaus have updated your report, the only thing showing should be your payment history. It's important to note, however, that just after debt review, your credit score will be low.
How Long Does Debt Review Last for Most People? Most people take 36–60 months to become debt free. That is 3–5 years.
To check your debt review status, you have to request your credit report from a credit bureau like TransUnion or Experian. You can do this for free once every year; otherwise, the credit report could cost a few Rand – we recommend checking with your chosen service provider before requesting your report.
Although the unpaid debt will go on your credit report and have a negative impact on your score, the good news is that it won't last forever. After seven years, unpaid credit card debt falls off your credit report. The debt doesn't vanish completely, but it'll no longer impact your credit score.
If you have no income at all, a debt review may not be possible because there are no funds to work with. However, do not lose hope. A debt counselor can advise you on other options, which may include: Payment Holiday: Arranging for a temporary pause on debt repayments until you find employment.
What do you need to qualify for debt review?
- Must be Employed or have an Income. ...
- If Married in Community of Property your Spouse must be included in the process. ...
- If a joint owner but Unmarried or Married Out of Community of Property then your spouse or partner should seriously consider taking part in the process. ...
- Affordability.
A: If you completed your previous Debt Review successfully then it should be possible. But it is very unlikely that your second Debt Review will be granted if you failed to pay your first Debt Review instalments. The main reason for this is that you will still need to pay your first Debt Counsellor's outstanding fees.
What Is Toxic Debt? Toxic debt refers to loans and other types of debt that have a low chance of being repaid with interest. Toxic debt is toxic to the person or institution that lent the money and should be receiving the payments with interest.
The debt review process ensures that the client makes only one monthly debt repayment to a payment distribution agency, which will then pay all the clients credit providers. Interest rates and repayment terms are better, making the monthly payment much lower.
If your credit score is lower but you meet the lender's minimum requirement, you could still get approved. That said, your borrowing costs will likely be much higher. Debt-to-income ratio: Lenders want to know you have the means to afford the monthly loan payment.
