The typical Mexican comida consists of an appetizer (apertivo), soup (sopa), a rice dish (sopa seca), a cooked vegetable or fish (entrada), the main course (platillo fuerte) usually accompanied by a salad (ensalada), beans (frijoles), dessert (postre) and a beverage (bebida).
In addition to corn and beans, traditional Mexican cuisine features squashes like pumpkin, chayote, and calabacita (similar to zucchini). Other staple vegetables include tomato, chili peppers, onion, avocado, cabbage, and radish.
An average household would usually have 3 big meals a day, desayuno, comida y cena; breakfast being the heartiest one, takes place first thing in the morning, anytime between 7 -10 am. After that comes lunch, also quite heavy, anywhere from 2 to 5pm and dinner is commonly served around 7pm.
