What is a money personality?
Five common money personalities are investors, savers, big spenders, debtors, and shoppers. Debtors and shoppers may tend to spend more money than is advisable. Investors and savers may overlap in personality traits when it comes to managing household money.
In this radio talk, Ayn Rand identifies two types of business personality: Money-Makers (innovators and entrepreneurs who take calculated risks and succeed on a free market) and Money-Appropriators (those who become rich illegitimately, by “cutting corners” or political favoritism).
Figuring out your money personality means learning how you feel about saving, spending, and growing your money. Knowing your money personality helps you make better financial choices that are right for you.
The Hoarder
A “hoarder” may find it difficult to spend money on what they consider “extras” or pleasures for themselves and their children. They may have a difficult time with the idea that they may have to use some of their savings for paying for expenses for their partner or their children.
Big spenders aren't bargain shoppers; they are comfortable spending money, don't fear debt, and often take big risks when investing. Savers: Savers are the exact opposite. They turn off the lights when leaving the room, shop only when necessary, and rarely make purchases with credit cards.
Extroverts, sensors, thinkers, and judgers tend to be the most financially successful personality types, according to new research. The researchers surveyed over 72,000 people measuring their personality, income levels, and career-related data.
The worrier:
This personality feels anxiety about finances regardless of how much money they have. Honda says that worriers are generally pessimistic and lack self-confidence. Worriers have a fear about life in general, one that they project onto money.
Your beliefs about spending and saving money can boost or block your financial success. Here's how to make your money mindset an asset. We all have a money personality — beliefs that can influence how we save, spend, and think about money.
At the core of our financial decisions lie our money personalities. These deeply ingrained behavior patterns and attitudes toward money shape how we save, spend, invest and give. Just as our personal traits influence our interactions with people, our money personality affects how we deal with finances.
Several studies have shown that wealth may be at odds with empathy and compassion. Research published in the journal Psychological Science found that people of lower economic status were better at reading others' facial expressions—an important marker of empathy—than wealthier people.
Is money disorder a mental illness?
The term is contentious among mental health professionals and as of 2023, money disorder is not a clinical diagnosis in either the DSM or ICD medical classifications of diseases and medical disorders.
Many of the hoarded items have a personal or practical value to them and they feel that they should not be wasted. They feel very possessive of their material and don't want anybody touching their things. Hoarders tend to have high IQ's and they also have difficulty processing information.
Financial hoarding can be a symptom of financial anxiety. The Journal of Financial Therapy defines the disorder as a 'miserly spending style toward both self and others; money is viewed as something to be hoarded for future catastrophes'.
The psychology of money refers to a person's attitude, behaviours and decision making around all things financial. If you learn to understand yours it can change your spending and savings habits, relieve some of the anxiety around money and lead to a happier, healthier financial wellbeing.
Brett Cranson - Wealth Advisor
Money language is a concept that reflects our attitudes, beliefs, and emotions surrounding money. Understanding how you relate to money can also create positive change.
“Most of those negative emotions, such as shame, fear or guilt, can keep us from taking action,” said Julie. “Those emotions can limit us, stripping our motivation to learn and take both big and small actions that have a significant impact on our financial future.”
INTJs, often considered as the most successful personality type, go by the names Mastermind or Architect; fitting descriptions for this personality type. They're analytical, observant and open-minded. INTJs balance carefully between the big picture and the little details needed to achieve global goals.
- 1: Risk Tolerant. Making serious money is oftentimes risky business. ...
- 3: Extraverted. Big earners often have big personalities to match. ...
- 4: Conscientious. ...
- 5: Less Neurotic.
ENTJ, ISTJ, and INTJ categories have the most billionaires. Interestingly, introverts seem to rule the roost here. Thinking(T) and judging(J) are the other common traits amongst the rich of the above list. But let's not jump the gun here.
A bad money mindset tends to breed a worse money mindset. Once you find yourself in a spiral of negative thinking, it's extremely easy to catastrophize. You might feel that you'll never be "good at money" or feel anxious about even the prospect of doing the work to become proficient.
What is the root of money anxiety?
Financial stress is a common struggle for many people. It can affect your mental and physical well-being and impact your overall quality of life. Money worries can come from different sources, including unexpected expenses, a sudden job loss or feeling unprepared for the future.
Dreaming about having money is common, but associating success with money is harmful because it can lead to patterns of money disorders, such as money worship. Other potential consequences include addictions to gambling and compulsive spending, both of which are dangerous to people in vulnerable states.
A mooch will usually mooch for multiple amenities. They'll borrow money from you and never pay back, always ask you for a ride but never offer it when they have money, etc.
KEY TAKEAWAYS. In terms of sums spent, men are actually bigger impulse buyers than women. The top five things men spend money on are electronics, alcohol, cars, gambling, and sports.
