Which blue crab has the most meat?
Male crabs are meatier and are the preferred crab for steaming. You can tell a male blue crab by its “apron,” the underbelly shell of the crab, which is narrow compared to the female's. Female crabs are fattier and are preferred for soup.
The #1 Male crab, also known as a “Jimmy”, are typically the most sought after type of crab. They typically range from 5 ½ – 6 ¼ inches. They are easily identified by their blue claws and inverted t-shaped apron which resembles the Washington Monument. #1 Males tend to have flakier meat.
Many believe that the female crab's meat boasts denser, sweeter flavor, but agree that the amount of meat differs. Point-to-point comparison weighs the male crab at heavier, but flakier meat. In fact, NOAA reports the heaviest male crab this last season tipped the scale at 1.1 pounds and a 10.72” point-to-point length!
A #1 Jimmy is a male blue crab that has filled out its shell and has enough meat to be caught and sold for steaming. A #2 Jimmy crab is not as big as a #1. These are male crabs that have recently shed their shell and haven't yet grown a new one (this process is called molting).
Most enthusiasts love the larger sizes in the male or "jimmy". That's when it comes down to more “bang for the buck.” An average blue crab weighs about 1/3 pound and yields about 2 ¼ ounces of meat. Add up the math and you'll find it takes about 6 crabs to pick a pound.
Male crabs are typically bigger and meatier than females, who stop growing after they reach maturity. But that's not the whole story. “It's all based on supply and demand,” said the owner of a crab house in Arbutus, who charges $25 more for males by the dozen.
Blue crabs reach maturity at approximately 12 to 18 months of age, growing to approximately five inches wide, which is the legal size for harvesting. The sexually mature crab is approximately five inches wide, which is the legal size for harvesting. Once the blue crab reaches maturity, it will begin to mate.
The Chesapeake Bay has had the largest blue crab harvest for more than a century. Maryland and Virginia are usually the top two Atlantic coast states in annual landings, followed by North Carolina.
Their Scientific Name Suggests They're Delicious

While there aren't huge differences between these two crabs, you will definitely notice a difference in size and price, and maybe even a slight difference in flavor. King crab is the best option for meat yield, while snow crab is the better choice for affordability.
How many blue crabs should I eat per person?
A good rule of thumb is about 6-10 Maryland Blue Crabs per person. If you are serving other food, we recommend about a 1/2 dozen crabs per person. A bushel of large crabs will feed 8-10 people.

How many crabs will you need? If you are just serving crabs, a good rule of thumb is about 8-12 crabs per person. If you are serving other food, we estimate about a 1/2 dozen crabs per person.
These toxins occur naturally in the shellfish's viscera, which are usually discarded. Those who enjoy cooking and eating crab should simply take precautions not to eat the viscera, located under the crab's back, and avoid using whole crabs in soups and other dishes.

Blue crabs eat clams, oysters, and mussels, as well as almost any vegetable or animal matter, preferably freshly dead or freshly caught food-sometimes even young crabs. Its predators include red drum, Atlantic croaker, herons, sea turtles and humans.
What is the best month to catch crabs?
The primary season for all crab species is October to January, when they are often at their largest and populations are highest after spawning. Some regions even stretch crabbing season into July. It depends on the area and specific type of crab to know when the season is and when crabs will be their freshest.
Typically, the life span for a female blue crab is 1-2 years and a male is 1-3 years; however, in some tagging studies, crabs aged 5 to 8 years old were caught.
