Why do most banks fail?
The most common cause of bank failure is when the value of the bank's assets falls below the market value of the bank's liabilities, which are the bank's obligations to creditors and depositors. This might happen because the bank loses too much on its investments.
Based on this array of flawed assumptions and mismanagement, each bank put billions of funds to work, some in loans and others in bonds. Most of these investments were made at lower interest rates. As inflation increased, by 2022, interest rates skyrocketed and these longer-term loans and bonds lost market value.
Rising interest rates and a sluggish economy brought failures at Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank, and First Republic Bank in what is now called the banking crisis of 2023.
Bank failures happen more often than you might think—there have been 568 in the U.S. since January 1, 2000. That's an average of almost 25 per year. But the back-to-back collapses of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Signature Bank in early 2023, followed by First Republic Bank in May, were unique in more ways than one.
The policy of too big to fail arose in part from pressures created by the lack of satisfactory bankruptcy arrangements for banks. It prevented market forces from closing banks and protected all uninsured depositors of large banks from loss in the event of failure.
The recent rise in interest rates by the Federal Reserve has increased the fragility of the U.S. banking system to the point that a substantial number of institutions are at risk of failing should there be a run on these banks by uninsured depositors.
After more than a year of booking strong profits on the back of the high interest they were able to charge on loans, banks are contending with a string of challenges heading into 2024, including weaker loan growth and potentially tougher capital rules.
Before Silicon Valley Bank collapsed in March, it had been 28 months since a U.S. bank went up in smoke — the longest stretch without a failure in more than 15 years.
While the US banking sector is stable, growing vulnerabilities leave at least some institutions under a near-term threat of funding pressure and capital shortfalls, according to Federal Reserve Bank of New York staff.

Are credit unions safer than banks?
However, because credit unions serve mostly individuals and small businesses (rather than large investors) and are known to take fewer risks, credit unions are generally viewed as safer than banks in the event of a collapse. Regardless, both types of financial institutions are equally protected.

Banking Turmoil 2023
The collapse of banks, such as Silicon Valley Bank and First Republic Bank, resulted from deficiencies in risk management and a lack of proactive supervision; they are unrelated to the bad loan practices of the subprime mortgage crisis of 2008.
Kareem Serageldin was the only banker in the United States who was sentenced to jail time for his role in the 2008 financial crisis. He was convicted of hiding losses by mismarking bond prices.
The most popular banks in the U.S. are regional banks like Truist Financial, TD Bank and First National of Omaha. The worst banks are Wells Fargo and Citibank. Wells Fargo is the worst bank overall, with a high percentage of unresolved complaints and loss of Better Business Bureau accreditation.

Should we take money out of the bank 2023?
In short, if you have less than $250,000 in your account at an FDIC-insured US bank, then you almost certainly have nothing to worry about. Each deposit account owner will be insured up to $250,000 - so, for example, if you have a joint account with your spouse, your money will be insured up to $500,000.
It remains unclear whether traditional banking will become extinct soon; however, what is certain is that its role will continue to evolve if it is going to survive in this ever-changing landscape of finance.
This is off the charts, 100% artificial, which means we're in a dangerous state," Harry Dent told Fox News Digital. "I think 2024 is going to be the biggest single crash year we'll see in our lifetimes."
Here's what typically happens. The FDIC announces that the bank is closed, and the FDIC is appointed as its receiver so it can help use the bank's assets to pay depositors and creditors. In most cases, the FDIC will try to find another banking institution to acquire the failed bank.
