Why is debt bad for us?
The
As we have discussed elsewhere, government debt reduces economic activity by crowding out private capital formation and by requiring future tax increases or spending cuts to accommodate future interest payments.
Higher interest costs could crowd out important public investments that can fuel economic growth — priority areas like education, R&D, and infrastructure. A nation saddled with debt will have less to invest in its own future. Rising debt means fewer economic opportunities for Americans.
The national debt enables the federal government to pay for important programs and services even if it does not have funds immediately available, often due to a decrease in revenue. Decreases in federal revenue coupled with increased government spending further increases the deficit.
There's a strong link between debt and poor mental health. People with debt are more likely to face common mental health issues, such as prolonged stress, depression, and anxiety. Debt can affect your physical well-being, too. This is especially true if the stigma of debt is keeping you from asking for help.
1) Switzerland. It is no surprise to see Switzerland on this list. Switzerland is a country that, in practically all economic and social metrics, is an example to follow. With a population of almost 9 million people, Switzerland has no natural resources of its own, no access to the sea, and virtually no public debt.
Who owns this debt? The public owes 74 percent of the current federal debt. Intragovernmental debt accounts for 26 percent or $5.9 trillion. The public includes foreign investors and foreign governments.
Bad debt can lead to stress by limiting your ability to enjoy life. Without a system to manage your loans and pay off credit card debt your stress can increase and take years off your life. Not to mention the constant stress debt collectors can place on you to pay off your debts.

Eliminating the U.S. government's debt is a Herculean task that could take decades. In addition to obvious steps, such as hiking taxes and slashing spending, the government could take a number of other approaches, some of them unorthodox and even controversial.
Is the US debt a problem?
The U.S. national debt has soared to historic levels relative to the size of the U.S. economy. Many economists say that a rapidly mounting debt load could soon diminish U.S. economic growth, restrict government spending on important programs, and raise the likelihood of financial crises.
Tax cuts, stimulus programs, increased government spending, and decreased tax revenue caused by widespread unemployment account for sharp rises in the national debt.

Congress puts a limit on the debt, which is known as the debt ceiling. When this limit is reached, the government must either raise or suspend the ceiling or reduce the debt. If the national debt gets too high, it could impact you because spending on government programs may be cut, or you may have to pay higher taxes.
In reality, high and growing debt levels will hinder long-term economic growth. In particular, CBO explains that "higher debt crowds out investment in capital goods and thereby reduces output relative to what would otherwise occur." In other words, high debt harms economic growth.
At the top is Japan, whose national debt has remained above 100% of its GDP for two decades, reaching 255% in 2023.
The United States boasts both the world's biggest national debt in terms of dollar amount and its largest economy, which resolves to a debt-to GDP ratio of approximately 128.13%. The United States' government's spending exceeds its income most years, and the US has not had a budget surplus since 2001.
Jerome Kerviel, The Most Indebted Person In The World, Owes $6.3 Billion To Former Employer, Societe Generale. In a hyper-competitive world where everyone strives to be the biggest, boldest and most famous, no one covets Jerome Kerviel record-breaking achievement. He is the most indebted person in the world.
If China was to sell all of the US public debt that it holds then the US would owe that money to somebody else instead. Pretty much nothing else would change vis a vis the US economy. But China holds around 5% of the total US public debt. Selling all of those Treasuries at once would certainly hurt the price.
The Treasury owes this part of the debt to other federal agencies. Intragovernmental holdings totaled more than $6.89 trillion in January 2023. 1 Why would the government owe money to itself? Because some agencies, like the Social Security Trust Fund, take in more revenue from taxes than they need.
Japan owns the most at $1.1 trillion, followed by China, with $859 billion, and the United Kingdom at $668 billion. In isolation, this $7.4 trillion amount is a lot, said Scott Morris, a senior fellow at the Center for Global Development.
What is worse than being in debt?
Worse than being in debt is losing your peace.
It's called being human. For some people that adversity takes the form of being in debt.
The truth is, we hate debt around here because of all the problems it causes. Debt robs your present and steals from your future. Debt keeps you stuck in a cycle that makes it impossible to build wealth. And debt can weigh you down so much you can't see a way out.
Debt can be good or bad—and part of that depends on how it's used. Generally, debt used to help build wealth or improve a person's financial situation is considered good debt. Generally, financial obligations that are unaffordable or don't offer long-term benefits might be considered bad debt.
Many people use debt to maintain a lifestyle that is beyond their means. They use their credit cards to purchase items they otherwise wouldn't be able to afford. In fact, accumulating large amounts of credit card debt is commonly viewed as an indicator that a person is overspending.
The United States pays interest on approximately $850 billion in debt held by the People's Republic of China. China, however, is currently in default on its sovereign debt held by American bondholders.
