Emmy Predictions via Feinberg Forecast: Updated Picks Ahead of Thursday’s Launch of Nominations Voting (2024)

SINCE THE LAST UPDATE

With the start of Emmy nominations voting arriving on Thursday, campaigning has been happening everywhere, at least in and around Los Angeles.

In recent days, one could find top-tier contenders on FYC panels (Jon Stewart and the other hosts of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show flew out from New York for theirs) and roundtables (check out THR’s), at the Ross House in Mt. Olympus (even campaigning-averse Donald Glover of Mr. and Mrs. Smith showed up), at the races (Sebastian Maniscalco promoted Max’s Bookie at the Santa Anita track) and even on pizza boxes (ABC is pushing Abbott Elementary to consumers of Prime Pizza).

Many chose this moment to share positive news about their contender —for instance, Apple announced the renewal of Palm Royale for a second season. Others, curiously, elected this moment to drop bad news about their contender —HBO/Max announced the cancellation of Tokyo Vice, Apple disclosed that Julianna Margulies is leaving The Morning Show, and NBC revealed that Late Night With Seth Meyers is losing its house band due to budget cuts —which surely cannot help their prospects. Go figure.

Meanwhile, all signs continue to point to a strong showing on the morning of the nominations announcement —July 17 —for a handful of shows: FX’s Shogun, The Bear and Fargo, Max’s Hacks and Netflix’s Ripley and Baby Reindeer — as you will see reflected in the update of the forecast that appears below.

NOTE BEFORE READING FURTHER

(1) This forecast, assembled by The Hollywood Reporter’s executive editor of awards coverage Scott Feinberg, reflects Scott’s best attempt to predict the behavior of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, not his personal preferences.

(2) Unlike many other lists, the objective of the forecast is not to include every show or person that is eligible for Emmys recognition, only the top tier of contenders.

(3) Nobody can watch every Emmy-eligible show, and Scott is no exception. He arrives at these projections by at least sampling as many contenders as possible, consulting with TV Academy members, reading reviews, analyzing awards campaigns and referencing the results of other award shows, as well as the historical preferences of the TV Academy.

(4) Under program categories, you can now find listed each program’s season that is eligible, its platform, release date (of the first episode of the eligible season) and Rotten Tomatoes scores (the first from critics, the second from audiences). We also note if the TV Academy has recognized prior seasons of the program in that category with a nomination (*) or award (^).

(5) The forecast will be updated regularly to reflect new developments. We encourage you to bookmark and return to this URL to find the latest update. (Older versions will be preserved and linked to at the bottom.)

FAQs

How are Emmy nominations determined? ›

Committees are formed to review entries for eligibility and high standards. Once accepted, each entry goes before different review committees, and their votes are cast to determine the final nominees. The final votes are then calculated by certified accounting firms within each region.

How many Emmys have the Simpsons won? ›

The Simpsons is no underachiever when it comes to Emmy Awards, having notched 37 wins over its run that spans 35 seasons and counting. Two of its victories came in the outstanding original music and lyrics category — and in back-to-back years.

What does Emmy stand for? ›

The first Emmy Awards ceremony was held in 1949. The name of the award derives from the term immy, short for image-orthicon, a camera tube used in early television production. It was changed to the name Emmy since the statuette is in the form of a winged female figure meant to depict one of the Greek Muses of art.

How much money do you get if you win an Emmy Award? ›

An Emmy acknowledgment is considered a prestigious achievement within the entertainment community, which can contribute to increased opportunities and career advancement for those in the industry, but there is no direct monetary reward associated with receiving an Emmy.

What does it take to get an Emmy nomination? ›

Your submission is reviewed by a peer group of qualified academy members in each category (actors for actors, musicians for musicians, etc). Each votes on the performances by ranking numbers- the highest rankings receive the nomination. The number of nominations are based on the number of submissions received.

What are the rules for Emmy nominations? ›

Rules. Among the Primetime Emmy Award rules, a show must originally air on American television during the eligibility period between June 1 and May 31 of any given year. In order to be considered a national primetime show, the program must air between 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m., and to at least 50 percent of the country.

How do they choose Emmy Awards? ›

Only members of the academy may vote for the awards, and members vote only within their own discipline—actors voting for actors, writers for writers, and so on. Categories in which awards are granted include dramatic series, comedy series, special drama, limited series, and variety, music, or comedy.

Do actors nominate themselves for an Emmy? ›

Producers may enter their programs for nominations in all categories. Individuals may enter themselves (and their team if the entry is for a team achievement) for specific individual awards.
