Is Geico Insurance Good?

Why Geico Is a Good Option

Overall, we found that there are several reasons why you should consider Geico for car insurance coverage. The insurer has some of the most affordable rates — our research found that Geico’s average rates tend to be 26% cheaper than the national average of $2,508 for good drivers. This is in addition to the savings that drivers can get by participating in the company’s discount offerings.

As one of the U.S.’s largest car insurance companies, Geico is readily available across the country. In addition, Geico is the only insurance provider we found that provides mechanical breakdown insurance, which is similar to an extended car warranty. Drivers can also participate in Geico’s DriveEasy program, which is a usage-based telematics program offering premium reductions to good drivers.

Where Geico Falls Short

In our research, there were a few areas we found where Geico fell short compared with its competitors. The insurer does not offer guaranteed asset protection (GAP) insurance, which protects you if your car is written off or totaled by paying the remaining difference between the actual cash value of a vehicle and the balance still owed through financing.

In addition, Geico falls short in several consumer studies conducted by J.D. Power. Finally, the company does not have as wide of a network of local agents as other companies such as State Farm.

Why Is My Geico Insurance So Expensive?

While Geico’s rates are lower than the average, there are instances where some drivers may pay more for coverage than others. As with any car insurance company, the car insurance quote you receive from Geico will depend on a variety of factors, some of which are in your control.

Geico Insurance Reviews (2024) (2)

The most common factors that affect car insurance rates are your:

  • Location
  • Vehicle
  • Age
  • Gender and marital status
  • Driving history
  • Credit history

Understanding what factors influence car insurance rates can help ensure you receive the best deal possible. For example, if you’re a young driver or you don’t have a good driving record, you’ll typically pay more for an auto insurance policy.

If you have poor credit, you’ll likely pay more for car insurance unless you live in California, Hawaii, Massachusetts or Michigan — where credit is not allowed as a car insurance cost factor.

Geico Car Insurance Rates

Here are some rate estimates based on these factors:

Driver ProfileGeico Average Monthly CostGeico Average Annual CostNational Average Annual Cost

What Factors Affect Home Insurance Costs?

The final price you pay for home insurance with Geico depends on several key factors like your location, property details and coverage needs. Here are several factors that impact home insurance costs.

  • Location: Your ZIP code can significantly influence your home insurance premium costs. States near coastal areas or those prone to natural disasters such as hurricanes or tornados often see the highest rates. Insurance premiums for most inland states tend to be lower.
  • Claims history: If you’ve filed a claim within the past three to five years, you can expect to see a spike in your home insurance rates. Speak with your local Geico agent to get a more accurate estimate when shopping for home insurance.
  • Property details: Having special home features, like a pool or trampoline, can raise your home insurance rates. This is because many home insurance companies view special features like these as an added liability risk.
  • Coverage needs: Homes with higher replacement cost values tend to have higher insurance premiums. In most cases, a higher limit for dwelling insurance is needed to cover the cost of repairs or a rebuild after a disaster or incident.
  • Deductible: If you choose a lower deductible, you will have a higher insurance premium. Raise your deductible to a higher amount to get a lower rate. This can pay off if you don’t drive as much or feel confident that you won’t have to file any claims. Homes in hurricane-prone states typically have a separate deductible for named tropical systems.

Geico Homeowners Insurance Coverage

Home insurance policies cover the cost of losses to your home and belongings following a severe weather event, theft or vandalism. Geico offers several standard types of home insurance coverage, including:

Geico Home Insurance CoverageDescription
Property damage(also referred to as dwelling coverage)This policy covers damage to your house and any permanent structures on your property from fire, wind, hail and water.
Personal propertyThis insurance covers belongings that were damaged or stolen such as furniture, appliances and clothing.

Personal liabilityThis insurance could help with medical expenses or property damage to others caused by you or members of your household. It can also pay for legal costs in the case of a lawsuit.
Medical billsThis covers medical payments for minor injuries to others who get hurt on your property.
Additional expensesThis insurance covers extra costs you might have to pay when experiencing a covered loss.

Your home insurance endorsem*nt options will vary based on which of Geico’s partners underwrites your home insurance policy.

Geico Life Insurance Coverage

Life insurance is a contract where a policyholder pays regular premiums in exchange for a lump-sum death benefit that’s paid out to their beneficiaries. It’s paid when the policyholder either passes away or a specific amount of time has passed. Purchasing a life insurance policy can provide financial security by replacing lost income or covering unexpected expenses.

Geico offers term life, whole life and universal life insurance. These policies include:

  • Term life insurance: This policy covers a specific period of time and could help replace lost income and other expenses stemming from an unexpected death. Policies are usually for 10, 15, 25 or 30 years.
  • Whole or universal life insurance: This type of policy lasts for your lifetime, as long as policy terms are met and premiums are paid. It can help with replacing income, providing supplemental income and assisting with estate planning.

USAA vs. Geico

USAA tends to be about 33% cheaper than the national average for good drivers based on our rate estimates. However, USAA is only available to active-duty military members, veterans and their families, so it is not a viable option for everyone.

Geico Insurance: FAQ

Below are frequently asked questions about Geico insurance reviews.

Geico does not charge a cancellation fee for early cancellation of your insurance policy. You can call 800-841-1587 to cancel your policy over the phone. Be sure to have plans to maintain insurance if you still own a vehicle to avoid a lapse in coverage.

Geico does not specify a refund processing time on its website. It may take up to 30 days to receive a refund if you paid by check, which is usually the slowest method. If you used a debit or credit card to pay for your policy, you may receive a refund within one or two weeks.

To file a claim, call the Geico claims department or file online through the website or the Geico mobile app. Geico pays claims by check after the accident investigation is complete, minus your deductible for repairs. If your car was totaled and you still owe on a loan or lease, Geico will pay your lender directly.

You can reach Geico’s claims department at 800-841-3000. Geico customers can also file claims through the mobile app at any time or file claims online at geico.com/claims.

A Geico claim can be settled in as little as 48 hours, according to our research. However, if you have a more complex case, it can take up to several months for your payout to happen. Each situation is different, so we recommend speaking with your claims adjuster to find out what your timetable looks like.

In order to turn off the Geico DriveEasy app, you’ll need to go to the settings menu in your app store, find the subscriptions tab, and turn off the DriveEasy subscription. To unenroll from the program entirely, call an agent at 800-841-3000.

If you already have good driving habits — and you don’t mind having some of your data tracked — the Geico DriveEasy program can be worth it. The program gives rate discounts for those who practice safe driving. However, it is one of the few telematics insurance programs that can negatively impact your rates based on your driving habits.
