Two children were electrocuted after accidentally coming in contact with a live electric wire while playing in a park owned by the Army Welfare Housing Organisation in Saravanampatti of Coimbatore on Thursday. The mishap occurred in the park attached to an apartment located at Raman Vihar on Thudiyalur Road.
The victims were identified as Viyoma Priya (8), daughter of Balachandar, and Jiyansh (6), son of Prasanth, reported The New Indian Express. Viyoma Priya was a student in Class 3, while Jiyansh was in LKG, attending different private schools in the locality.
Eyewitnesses recounted the incident, which took place around 6:30 PM. According to preliminary inquiries, a wire supplying electricity to the garden had broken and made contact with play equipment. The children inadvertently touched the equipment while playing resulting in immediate electrocution, as per a report on Times of India.
Viyoma Priya succumbed to the electric shock on the spot, while Jiyansh sustained severe injuries. The residents rushed the children to a nearby private hospital in Avarampalayam. However, the doctors declared the children dead upon arrival.
Following protocol, the bodies of the victims were transferred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for postmortem examination.
The Saravanampatti police have registered a case and launched a thorough investigation into the incident. Authorities are examining the circ*mstances surrounding the tragic event and ensuring that all necessary measures are taken to prevent such accidents in the future.
In 2022, 11 people including two children died and 15 others sustained injuries in a massive electrocution during a chariot procession at a temple in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district. According to the police, the mishap took place when the temple car they were standing on came in contact with a high-transmission line at Appar Madam temple in Kalimedu. Several leaders including PM Modi and TN CM Stalin extended their condolences to the family of the deceased members.
