As we have explained, king crab has a short harvesting season, which leads to limited availability. They also have a limited cold water habitat. Additionally, they have a lobster-like flavor. This makes king crab the more expensive of the two; snow crab legs are typically more affordable than king crab ones.
On average, it can range from $30 to $60 per pound, making it one of the most expensive types of crab.
Undercurrent News — a news outlet focused on seafood business news and data — noted a drop of over 30% in snow crab wholesale prices. Amar says that as inflation hits consumers, the demand for high-ticket grocery items, like crab legs, is generally lower, which in turn means less of a need to fish right now.

Although there are over one hundred subspecies of king crabs, the kind that we usually focus on is one of these three: Red (the most prized), Blue, and Golden. The best season for harvesting King Crab is from late October to January.
Following the meetings, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game said Bering snow crab season will be closed for 2023-2024; Bristol Bay red king crab will open. Tanner crab will also be open for commercial fishermen. Both the snow crab and Bristol Bay red king crab seasons were closed in 2023.
Overfishing
Last year, researches discovered that the female population of snow crabs in the sea had dropped 99% from 2021. The male population also faced a substantial decline. The rise in crab demand has resulted in increased fishing, primarily through the use of bottom trawls.
Ultimately, the answer depends on your personal preferences and budget. If you're looking for a sweet, delicate flavor and slightly chewy texture, king crab might be the better option. If you prefer a rich, buttery taste and tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture, then lobster might be the way to go.
Lobster is generally more expensive than crab, but king crab legs can sometimes sell for more than a whole lobster, as they are full of sought-after white meat and typically contain more meat than whole lobsters, pound for pound.
As for taste — while both crab species have an excellent balance of sweet, mild fish flavors, snow crab legs have a slightly more briny taste and delicate texture, while King Crab legs are meatier, with a texture more comparable to that of lobster.
Adult males often skip a molt and keep the same shell for one or two years. Red king crabs can grow very large with the record female and male weighing 10.5 and 24 pounds, respectively. These large crabs were estimated to be 20–30 years old.

Snow Crab. Like King crabs, Snow crabs have very long legs that provide a lot of their meat, which is a little more fibrous than King crab, but very tasty. Because their legs are thinner and less impressive than king crab legs, they are less popular with restaurants and thus more affordable for you.
While there aren't huge differences between these two crabs, you will definitely notice a difference in size and price, and maybe even a slight difference in flavor. King crab is the best option for meat yield, while snow crab is the better choice for affordability.
